The Buckeye Prep Invitational tipped off at New Covenant Believers Church in Columbus, Ohio on Friday with a slate of six 3rd, 4th and 5th grade games. The first round of games featured matchups between REP Elite 2032 vs The Program, and 2033 SPE Phenoms vs the Columbus Monarchs. The Program easily defeated REP Elite (49-25), while the SPE Phenoms got by the Columbus Monarchs (49-30) .

Round two saw the #1 nationally ranked Buckeye Prep RA1 2032 soundly defeat the Midwest Basketball Club-Cummins (32-11), while the Columbus Monarchs held on to beat Charging Elite (48-40). It should be noted that the reconfigured Charging Elite played the Monarchs very tough, and was actually leading for parts of the game.

The final round of games featured two 5th grade games in Charging Elite vs the Ohio Hoopsters-Underdawgzz and the Columbus Monarchs vs Nova Village. Charging Elite met little resistance from the Ohio Hoopsters, winning comfortably (78-32). The second game between Nova Village and Columbus Monarchs was much closer, with the Monarchs pulling out a close 28-24 victory.

As expected, there were several players who logged in standout performances on Friday. Hammond Russell VII (4’9″/WF/2032/Reynoldsburg, OH) had a monster game, while leading his Columbus Monarchs squad with a game-high 17 points. Zion Lancaster (5’5″/C/2032/Pickerington, Ohio) got off to a nice start as well, leading his The Program team with 16 points and 13 rebounds in an opening night win.

Rushin Anstine (5’2″/SG/2031/Westerville, OH) and AJ Davenport (4’7″/PG/2031/Dayton, OH) both had outstanding games with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Jordan Taylor (4’9″/PG/2032/Gahanna, OH) displayed 3-level scoring, including a pair of treys and a midrange pull-up to pace his Buckeye Prep team with a game-high 12 points. We have to give a shoutout to Isaiah Mason (4’3″/PG/2033/Pittsburg, PA), who was dynamic and skilled, while leading his SPE Phenoms team in scoring.

Those players are listed below. Tomorrow should be very competitive in multiple grade division, as nationally ranked teams and Ohio’s best descend on Columbus.  Stay tuned for our Day II report.
