The Central Ohio Basketball Association (COBA) league championship tournament wrapped up on Sunday and proved to be ultra competitive. In the 4th and 5th grade divisions, the outcome of the games was not determined until the last possession of the respective games.

In the 5th grade division, the top 2 teams in the city faced off with #1 ranked Gahanna (39-6) and the #3 ranked Worthington Red (33-3). Entering the contest, Worthington Red enjoyed a 2-1 record over Gahanna and was arguably the best team over the course of the season.

Gahanna jumped out to an early lead, which they held until late into the 4th quarter. In fact, Gahanna was up by 7 points at the start of the 4th quarter, and was still up by 3 points with 1:38 left in the game. However, a late run by Worthington was the difference in the 31-28 win.

The 4th grade championship game was also a barn burner, and featured a matchup between #4 ranked Big Walnut (41-4) and #3 ranked Pickerington (31-8). Although Big Walnut would race out to an early lead, a late run by Pickerington would not only close the gap, but actually result in a late-game lead. However, by the time the horn sounded, Big Walnut would take and hold to the lead to claim the 33-31 win and the 4th grade title.

In terms of the other boys divisions, #9 ranked Olentangy Berlin-Wise (15-6) defeated the  unranked Olentangy Berlin-Cobbs to claim the 3rd grade crown, while Licking Heights defeated Bexley (46-54) to claim the 6th grade title. From what we saw all season, it’s safe to say that Central Ohio Basketball is very competitive, and is poised for long-term success statewide! Finally, we will be publishing our “All-Central Ohio Teams” early this week.
