With their dominant 6-0 run at the 2023 Buckeye Prep Invitational this past weekend, the 2032 Buckeye Prep Hoopsters have now solidified their place as the #1 ranked team in Ohio. Although the Hoopsters are the highest ranked team nationally (6th) in the state, the Hoopsters needed to take care of home this past weekend to formally be considered the top 3rd grade team in the state.
So far this young season, Buckeye Prep has won 2 titles in 3 weeks and 2 runner-up finishes. Not content to play in smaller/local events for easy wins and social media attention, the Hoopsters travel the country in search of the best competition they can find; Consequently, Buckeye Prep is battle-tested and is executing at a high level!
At the Buckeye Prep Invitational, most of the top teams in the state were in the house seeking the best competition they could find, and to challenge themselves against the best teams in the state. TNBA Elite has been dominating the competition in northeast Ohio for the last 2 years, and the Y-Elite Superstars arrived in Columbus with a bit of a reputation that they were willing to put on the line. One of the hottest teams in the state this year is Chauncey Cumberlander’s Columbus Monarchs, who have continued to surprise teams with their scrappiness and toughness!
Not only have the Hoopsters taken care of business in Ohio so far, they have either beaten or have competed against the best teams in the country. In fact, just last week, they had the #2 ranked team in the country on the ropes for most of the game, until a late run by NYBA Elite in the championship game of the Music City Premier in Nashville, TN. So far this season, Buckeye Prep has an overall record of 28-5, with their only losses to #2 ranked NYBA Elite, #4 ranked Global United, #6 ranked Hoosier Phenoms and Dews Elite (4th grade team).
Anybody who has spent some time watching the Hoopsters play understands why they’ve had so much success. Buckeye Prep enjoys balanced scoring, as any one of four players can lead the team in scoring in any given game. In addition, the Hoopsters move the ball like a high school team and play help side defense at an elite level. Moreover, the kids are unselfish, play for each other, are disciplined and tough. Throw in competent coaching and a healthy and supportive parental group, and you can understand why this team is so special. Next up for Buckeye Prep is the All-Ohio Nike Cup this coming weekend followed by the Dru Joyce Classic in Cleveland next week. Finally, below are our initial Ohio team rankings.
