According to his father, Marcus Johnson (5’7”/CG/2026/Garfield Heights, Oh) has already received his first D-I scholarship offer. Johnson, widely accepted as the #1 sixth grader in the country, was playing up against kids 2-3 years older than him in an open gym when Youngstown State Head Coach Jarred Calhoun extended the offer,” Sonny Johnson Sr. said. It’s interesting to note that several months, Youngstown State extended an offer to Johnson’s older brother, Sonny Jr., and Johnson’s cousin, Meechie Johnson, received early offers and has recently committed to Ohio State. Now we know that there are a number of people who are skeptical about offers to kids this young, and there are no guarantees that an offer this early will hold by the time a kid reaches high school, but it’s really not that unusual for kids who have established national reputations. Although early recognition is often frowned upon, Johnson’s offer is proof that college coaches are keeping an eye the next up and coming players and are not afraid to get out in front with offers. Congratulations to Marcus and his family for what is likely to be the first of many offers!
